Lesson 1 of 5

What is Money?

๐ŸŽฏ In this lesson you'll learn:

  • โ€ขUnderstand why people invented money
  • โ€ขSpot different forms of money: coins, notes, and digital
  • โ€ขLearn the three jobs money does

A Long, Long Time Agoโ€ฆ

Before money existed, people had to trade things. If Aanya had extra mangoes and wanted a football, she had to find someone who had a football AND wanted mangoes. Tricky, right?

To make life easier, humans invented money โ€” something almost everyone agrees has value. Now Aanya could sell her mangoes for money, then use that money to buy a football. Easy!

Money in Different Shapes

Today, money comes in three shapes:

๐Ÿช™ Coins โ€” round metal money (like โ‚น1, โ‚น2, โ‚น5, โ‚น10) ๐Ÿ“„ Paper notes โ€” colourful paper money (like โ‚น10, โ‚น20, โ‚น50, โ‚น100, โ‚น500) ๐Ÿ“ฑ Digital money โ€” money that lives in your phone (UPI, bank apps)

They all do the same job โ€” let people trade without swapping stuff!

Did You Know?

The โ‚น500 note has Mahatma Gandhi on it. The โ‚น10 coin has the Lion Capital of Ashoka โ€” India's national emblem. Every note has a different colour so you can tell them apart quickly!

๐Ÿ›’

It Pays for Things

You give money, you get stuff. That's the basic deal!

๐Ÿฆ

It Stores Value

Keep your money safe today, spend it next month or next year.

๐Ÿ“

It Measures Value

A pencil costs โ‚น10, a bicycle costs โ‚น5,000 โ€” so a bicycle is worth 500 pencils!
