Taxes: Why We Pay Them

๐ŸŽฏ In this lesson you'll learn:

  • โ€ขLearn what taxes are
  • โ€ขUnderstand where tax money goes
  • โ€ขSee why everyone needs to pay their share

The Magic Road

Aanya wondered: "Who builds the roads? Who runs the schools? Who puts out fires?"

"Taxes," her mom said.

Taxes are money that everyone pays to the government. The government uses this money to build and maintain things that everyone uses:

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Roads and bridges ๐Ÿซ Government schools ๐Ÿฅ Government hospitals ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Police and fire stations ๐Ÿ’ก Street lights ๐Ÿ“š Libraries

It's like everyone puts money in a big jar, and the government uses it to take care of the country!

Types of Taxes

There are two main types of taxes:

Income Tax ๐Ÿ’ผ When grown-ups earn money, they give a percentage to the government. If someone earns โ‚น10 lakh per year, they might pay about โ‚น1 lakh in tax.

GST (Goods & Services Tax) ๐Ÿ›’ When you buy things, a small tax is added. If a toy costs โ‚น100, you might pay โ‚น118 (including 18% GST). The extra โ‚น18 goes to the government.

"But why do I pay GST?" Aanya asked.

"Because the government uses that money to make the roads you drive on, the schools you learn in, and the hospitals that keep everyone healthy."

Where Does Tax Money Go?

Here's approximately how the Indian government spends tax money:

โ€ข ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Defence (army, navy) โ€” 13% โ€ข ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Infrastructure (roads, bridges) โ€” 17% โ€ข ๐Ÿ“š Education โ€” 10% โ€ข ๐Ÿฅ Health โ€” 5% โ€ข ๐ŸŒพ Agriculture subsidies โ€” 8% โ€ข ๐Ÿ’ฐ Interest on loans โ€” 20% โ€ข ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Running the government โ€” 9% โ€ข ๐ŸŽ Social welfare โ€” 18%

Every rupee of tax is accounted for. It's YOUR money being used for YOUR country!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Taxes = National Dues

Everyone pays a share so the government can build roads, schools, hospitals, and more.

๐Ÿ’ณ

Income Tax vs GST

Income tax is on what you earn. GST is on what you buy. Both fund public services.

๐Ÿค

Everyone Contributes

Taxes work because everyone pays their fair share. It's how a society takes care of itself.
